Dato' Lawrence Teo, founder of I Synergy Holdings Berhad and Affiliate Junction (AJ), an offline and online affiliate marketing network. Simply put, affiliate marketing is a marketing solution that connects advertisers with consumers via affiliates or publishers,? says Teo. It is cost effective, efficient and provides mutual bene?ts to both the advertiser and the affiliate.?
A graduate in the electrical engineering field at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Teo is no stranger to hard work. From young, he worked in numerous part-time jobs as a night market vendor, cashier, sales assistant, and waiter among others, to earn pocket money and gain experience. Raised in a family of four, his father ran a nursery and mother was a teacher. Regrettably, the nursery was closed when Teo was only 15 years of age. Nevertheless, his parents' tenacity and perseverance inspired him to push through any challenges he faced. Ever since I could remember, I had a strong desire to improve my life in every way,? he recalls. He was fortunate to enter first year of university right after Form Five, and he graduated ahead of his peers at the early age of 21.
Upon his graduation, Teo worked as a mechanical engineer, and as a part-time insurance agent, to improve his earnings. It was quite a feat juggling these two jobs. After my day job as an engineer, I would change from my uniform into a business attire at the petrol station before meeting my insurance clients,? he says with a smile. Within two years, he achieved his goal of earning a five-figure income before turning 40. Though a significant feat for a 25-year-old, he knew he was destined for more. I view these careers as stepping stones from which I learned the value of persistence, a positive spirit, integrity and maintaining a good reputation. However, these careers lead to a linear growth as they still rely very much on your own time and effort,? he shares. I wanted a business that can generate income while running on autopilot.?
Teo found it in the US where he met a successful entrepreneur earning a good income through a simple business model ? affiliate marketing. The concept was so new to me then and I immediately saw its potential. But when I brought it back to Malaysia, and established iSYNERGY with my core team members in 2008, we found that it was really tough,? he divulges. He explains that at the time, ecommerce was popular in the US. Naturally, affiliate marketing is an additional advertising channel for ecommerce merchants. But in Malaysia, the ecommerce landscape was not matured at all,? he laments. As a result, he lost personal savings devoted to the business within two years, but not all is lost. Firstly, he was grateful to his committed team, comprising school and university mates, who stood by him despite not receiving salary for months at one point. Secondly, they managed to secure a foothold as the 50th flagship application in MyKad, which was a result of sheer persistence that saw Teo approaching various officers in JPN and MDEC for months. To us, it was a breakthrough as we managed to combine the brick-and-mortar retailers with online merchants on our platform,? he reveals. This model works in Malaysia, and Southeast Asia, where a significant number of businesses still operate offline.
Now, all they needed was funds and Teo had to drive to Singapore to pitch to angel investors. Strangely enough, they couldn't see the value and potential of affiliate marketing amazon business which is on the cusp of rapid adoption in Southeast Asia. I was even willing to offer 30% to 40% of the company for merely RM100,000 but there were no takers,? he says with amazement. Undaunted, he approached an insurance client for the loan. It was given and Affiliate Junction or AJ was launched in 2010. It soon gained traction and in December 2011, it attained the Pioneer Multimedia Super Corridor Malaysia Status, a recognition of iSYNERGY's capability to develop and commercialise internet-based marketing.
Through AJ, merchants, retailers and advertisers are connected to the network's affiliates, who can be incentivised for sales transactions or lead generation, depending on the predefined objective of respective affiliate programs. Affiliates then carry out the promotional activities through a range of online and offline solutions. MyKad Smart Shopper was the network's ?rst offline retail affiliate program offering rewards to registered MyKad holders at participating outlets while rewarding affiliates on their successes. Affiliates who introduce merchants into the platform also earn incentives for successful transactions made via AJ platform. Currently, affiliates who wish to join AJ would need to pay an annual licensing fee to access a variety of valuable resources such as structural training and support systems.
Since 2010, iSYNERGY experienced a yearly growth of 35% and now has business centres all across the country. I believe that when you do something and don't gain the results you want, at the very least, you would have learned something,? says Teo who is a great believer in giving back to society, having been involved in a few charity projects himself. Moreover, he put his experience to good use. I joined Capital, an angel investor network as an angel investor and advisory board member because of my passion to help other young entrepreneurs. I find it very meaningful and rewarding to nurture them, offer some ideas and invest in their ideas,? he says.
Moving forward, iSYNERGY will expand into Asia Pacific, and commence its operations in Indonesia by November or December. Additionally, iSYNERGY is to create a business presence in Australia where there are plans to expand its affiliate marketing network. Currently, the marketing arm of iSYNERGY is listed on the National Stock Exchange of Australia. Nevertheless, iSYNERGY is in the process of having all the different companies in the group consolidated under one roof for the listing on the main board, Australian Securities Exchange. In a recent article, the Christian Science Monitor reported that the one bright spot today in the jobs picture is the dramatic growth of the freelance sector.
An interesting report from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge says that ?freelance' jobs are expected to make up half of all jobs during the economic recovery. Just like we associate Ebay as a place to sell our stuff, there are services like Elance and Odesk where you can sell your skills?from simple office services to complex consulting skills.
Elance, for example, reports paying out over $400 million to freelancers?so this is not a flash in the pan. This is a substantial and rapidly growing earning opportunity. They have postings every single day for about 50,000 open freelance jobs, most of which can be done from anywhere in the world.
Many baby boomers have a 20-, 30- or 40-year career that they've trained for and know cold. They have industry contacts, know how to get things done and have real insight into future trends. Many also have lots of good advice for new people coming up through the ranks.
Does it make sense to abandon all that expertise just because you are getting the gold watch and moving to Costa Rica ?

People have turned hobbies like knitting, model airplane building, wood-working, photography and literally hundreds of other favorite activities into a part-time or full-time income. This is especially appealing to individuals who do not want to set up complicated websites, shopping carts and technical systems.
You can earn affiliate commissions without having a website of your own (but you may want a simple blog which is very popular for this kind of activity). By promoting goods and services on other people's websites you will earn a commission for every sale you refer to your partner's website.
5. Teach others what you know how to do through books, videos, audio recording, instruction manuals and seminars over the web.
This is one of the most lucrative ways to turn your experience into an income. If you can train, teach or educate this might be your best way for earning abroad. There is a little complexity here so don't dive in on this one if you are a novice with technology and creating products.
But, you have a lifetime of experience. If you know how to do something particularly well and are articulate enough to explain it, you can prepare materials that can be sold to people interested in learning all about it.
Tip: You can also find people on the job and on project networks who can help you create these products. So, get going! Now is a great time to open your mind to the work-abroad possibilities.

Affiliate marketing is a prominent, contemporary type of performance-based Internet marketing whereby a company compensates affiliates for each customer referred through the affiliate's marketing efforts. It is regarded as one of the most promising customer acquisition tools in eTourism. The present study aims to identify the key variables affecting consumer trust in tourism-related affiliate websites. A mixed method approach was adopted to explore both the consumers' perspective, via focus-group interviews, and that of tourism affiliate practitioners via an online questionnaire. The main findings suggest that there is a distinction between pivotal determinants of trust and trust-enhancing factors. It is suggested that affiliates need to expose their competence and integrity to consumers. Affiliates that feature integrated booking engines need to reduce consumer's uncertainty by structural assurances and by providing background information on their websites.

Managing more listings likely makes hosts more seasoned in terms of serving guests, but it may undermine host quality due to hosts' constrained capability. This study examines the effects of host quality attributes and the number of listings per host on the reservation performance of these listings. Design/Methodology/Approach Using a large-scale but granular dataset of 5,805 active listings of 4,608 Airbnb hosts in Austin, Texas, this study estimates the effects of host attributes (host quality and listing quantity) on the performance of the hosts' Airbnb listings through a blend of regression models. Findings This study evidences that host quality attributes significantly influence listing performance through cue-based trust. In addition, this study finds a 'trade-off' between host quality and the quantity of their listings. As the number of listings managed by a host increases, the performance effects of host quality diminish. Research Implications The business implications of this study include the suggestion that sharing economy businesses such as Airbnb should sustain service quality through incentivizing hosts to improve host quality while balancing the quantity of listings managed. Originality/Value This study contributes to the literature through its meaningful theoretical extension in the sharing economy context and unique data-driven insights enabled by an analytical approach. It addresses the critical but less researched topic of host quality and listing quantity and generates important practical business and policy implications.. Though a well-planned AM model can greatly benefit the e-commerce strategies of an enterprise, a haphazardly implemented system can expose a business enterprise to major risks and vulnerabilities, which can lead to great financial losses through fraudulent activities. This research-in-progress has identified some of the risks and the technical background of those scenarios. The research will now move on to build a functional prototype of an AM network to design and test solutions to control the identified risks.

This study tests a model of antecedents (consumer experience, propensity to trust, reputation, perceived website size, ease of use, perceived usefulness, and website quality) and consequences of consumers' trust toward online travel websites. Trust is expected to predict consumer attitude, perceived risk, and intention to purchase travel online. Data of 1,431 users of online travel websites were selected from the Supreme Council of Universities Database-Egypt (SCU) and analyzed through structural equation modeling. The findings show that all the aforementioned factors with the exception of consumer experience influence consumer trust toward online travel websites. Trust influences consumers' attitude, perceived risk, and intention to purchase travel online.

Know The Risks In Affiliate Marketing
The use of affiliate marketers is a highly efficient and effective way for marketers to generate online traffic and new customers. The lack of control that a marketer has over the actions of its affiliates, however, creates increased risk of regulatory action. Recent actions by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) make clear that lack of control by a marketer will be no defense to an enforcement action.The FTC has a long history of holding marketers accountable for the actions of those who engage in advertising and marketing activities on their behalf. In the last decade for example, the FTC brought numerous enforcement actions against marketers based on the violations of the Telemarketing Sales Rule or Do Not Call List by their agents. Indeed, even in cases where the marketer seemingly had no knowledge of the violation, the FTC took the position that the marketer had an affirmative obligation to monitor the activities of its telemarketing agents to ensure that they are complying with the law.
The world of affiliate marketing presents even greater challenges for marketers as the identity of the publishers is often unknown to the marketer and it is virtually impossible for any marketer to effectively monitor all of activities of its affiliates. Nonetheless the FTC has made clear that targeting misleading advertising by affiliate marketers will be a top priority for the FTC.
In a recent speech , FTC Bureau Director David Vladeck expressed a growing concern over false and deceptive claims being made by affiliates about products, fake blogs and other content that is not clearly identified as advertising. He warned that legitimate marketers should play a role in bringing order and accountability to the affiliate marketing industry. The FTC's New Testimonial and Endorsement Guidelines have created a new landscape for marketers and their affiliates as the Guidelines make clear that both the marketer and the affiliate can be liable for false product claims and for the failure of the affiliate to disclose material connections to the advertiser.
Recently, the FTC demonstrated just how serious it is about its affiliate marketing initiative when it brought an action for a temporary restraining order and asset freeze against the organization I Works and its principals. This case is one of the largest cases to be brought yet by the Commission in the affiliate marketing space. The taken action of an asset freeze is an indicator of just how aggressive the FTC is likely to be on this issue. The FTC is also seeking full restitution.
The case is significant in relation to affiliate marketing because many of the ads in question were disseminated by affiliates over whom I Works allegedly did not have control. Thus this case will undoubtedly address the question of whether and to what extent the marketer can be held liable for the acts of its affiliates and what degree of monitoring is necessary to avoid liability.
The case serves as good wake-up call to marketers utilizing the services of affiliate networks to ensure that they have reasonable and proper monitoring and compliance procedures in place designed to control the action of their affiliates. A reasonable compliance and monitoring program should at a minimum include the following:
Know your affiliates. If you are contracting with a broker or network, ask them to identify the affiliates and publishers that they use. Transparency is important.
Establish procedures to regularly and routinely monitor the affiliate ads and the traffic being generated by those ads.
Provide clear guidelines and instructions to the affiliates. Make sure they know what claims they can and cannot make about your products and instruct them to disclose the existence of material connections with you. Content such as fake blogs, user reviews and the like should never be tolerated.
Put teeth into your compliance and monitoring programs. Do not process orders generated from non-compliant ads, and take appropriate disciplinary action against affiliates who violate your policies.
At the end of the day, as we saw in the telemarketing arena, the FTC may be moving toward a standard of strict liability. Having an effective compliance monitoring program in place should certainly help mitigate the risk. It is no longer a luxury?it's a necessity for any marketer in the affiliate marketing opportunities south africa space.
